Vintage Monkey Floor Lamp by Mario Lopez Torres
An exceptional work of art as floor lamp by highly acclaimed Mexican artist and sculptor Mario Lopez Torres. This elongated floor lamp, made of woven chuspata over a hand-sculpted wrought iron frame, features a whimsical perched monkey with a brass face and patinated iron fingers and toes. The base's linear design is influenced by the Greek key shape, also know as a meander, which is made up of a long, continuous line that repeatedly folds back on itself, mimicking the ancient meandering of a river: the eternal flow of life. A brass authentication plaque, signed Mario Lopez Torres, can be found on the base.
The grasses for Mario Lopez Torres furniture were (and still are) harvested from the bed of the river that runs through the town where he lives and works in Michoacán, Mexico. From the grass harvesting and drying, to sculpting and finishing, every step of the process happens locally. This commitment to community, process, and craftmanship is evident in all of the artist's work. MARIO LOPEZ TORRES: (b. Mexico City, 1952 - ) Lopez Torres is a true artisan, mastering the art of traditional chuspata crafts. He has been creating since his childhood and has had his studio since 1974. His use of natural materials and customary techniques, combined with his stunning animal-inspired designs, bring a touch of Mexico's rich heritage into the home. CONDITION: In original vintage condition, with wear commensurate of age and use. There some areas of frayed chuspata on one side of the base. Retains original wiring.
