Marcello Fantoni for Raymor Large Square Drip Glaze Bowl, Italy 1960s
An impressive Marcello Fantoni for Raymor square drip glaze centerpiece or catchall bowl. This Italian modernist masterpiece is made from chunky earthenware ceramic with a luscious textural layering of white, orange, brown, and green matte glazes. It's gritty, but oh so elegant, and wonderfully expressive. Fantoni was known to have taken inspiration from post-war Surrealism (ie: Picasso's Cubist period) and American Abstract Expressionism that gained momentum in the 50s and 60s (think, Jackson Pollock's drip paintings). This piece, in particular, is such a beautiful example of Fantoni's use of gestural abstraction, showcasing the spontaneous and expressive movements of the glazing process. A deliberate choice, aiming to break down the boundaries between art and life by emphasizing emotion and the process of creation. Hand signed Fantoni for Raymor Italy on underside.
